Riparian Ecosystems of the Ceira River

Description

The intervention in the project “FLUVIAL REHABILITATION OF THE RIBERAL ECOSYSTEMS OF THE CEIRA RIVER – MUNICIPALITIES OF ARGANIL, GÓIS, PAMPILHOSA DA SERRA AND LOUSÔ is based on a sustainable development strategy for waterways, through the implementation of technical solutions closer to nature. These solutions include the cutting, containment, and cleaning of exotic and/or invasive vegetation species, as well as the use of live stakes and planting of native vegetation species.

Such solutions, like the vegetation cover of the riparian corridor with native species characteristic of riparian habitats, accelerate the natural regeneration of the riparian ecosystem, promoting in the medium term the existence of viable populations of plant and animal species characteristic of the riparian environment, as well as the reconstitution and protection of slopes and banks against fluvial erosion. The rehabilitation and enhancement of the riverside corridor is fundamental to improving the ecological, hydrological, and landscape functions associated with the river system and adapting the territory to climate change.

The project foresees the reuse of all material resulting from selective cutting and formative pruning of native trees existing in the intervention area (or surrounding areas subject to similar work), for the installation of natural engineering and sustainable construction solutions aimed at stabilizing the riverbanks and slopes.
