The current facilities of the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of the University of Aveiro are located on Rua da Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Aveiro and were built in 1986. Inaugurated in 1988, they represent the culmination of a series of occupied spaces, from the location on Rua Mendonça to building number 15 on Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho.

It is a compact building, organized around two courtyards with distinct configurations. One rectangular courtyard extends longitudinally along a north/south axis, housing classrooms and the library on the ground floor, and faculty offices and management services on the upper floor. The other courtyard, square-shaped within the square, houses support services, namely the administrative offices, and is adjacent to the auditorium.

Three separate entrances provide access to the building. One entrance is connected to the street of the Aveiro Volunteer Firefighters Association, another to the south side of the building and connected to Avenida da Universidade, and finally an entrance directly to the auditorium atrium, allowing it to function independently from the rest of the facilities. Two stairwells ensure vertical circulation between the two floors and are located at the two entrances of the building. Attached to the staircase connected to the Avenida da Universidade entrance, an elevator ensures accessibility for users with reduced mobility.

The project aimed to resolve the various structural pathologies present in the building, improve the building’s energy efficiency, as well as its thermal and acoustic performance. The various spaces that make up the building were functionally reorganized, clarifying the use of each space, as well as defining the different usage circuits.

In aesthetic terms, the building was given an aesthetic analogous to the other spaces of the Santiago Campus of the University of Aveiro through the application of exposed brick on the external facade.
