The building is part of a consolidated urban front and follows the morphological characteristics of the buildings that make up Rua Gomes Freire in Coimbra. The design solution provided for the conversion of the building into a single dwelling spread over three floors and the attic. The aim was to make the most of the pre-existing structure, while also restoring what we believe to have been the relationship between the building and the rear courtyard. To this end, we felt it was important to create a link between the interior of the house and the courtyard, which would encourage frequent use of this protected outdoor space.
The restoration of this dynamic led to the distribution of part of the programme in the backyard, with the construction of a small annexe that was assigned the function of a gym, thus enhancing the use of the exterior as a distribution and crossing space. The project reconfigured the existing layout very selectively, making the most of the building’s structural scheme and its programmatic distribution, while maintaining the originality of the spaces as much as possible.
